MY BACKGROUND AND WHAT BROUGHT ME HERE…
My financial services career started in commercial banking and took a turn when I enrolled in an introductory financial planning course during graduate school. It was there that I met a professor who would change my career trajectory. After thoroughly loving the course content, I subsequently switched gears and went to work as a portfolio manager for high-net worth and institutional clients at a private bank. While I enjoyed managing money, I realized I wanted to be more involved in a client’s holistic financial picture, not just the investments. This led me to pursuing the Certified Financial Planner™ education requirements and ultimately to working at Navigoe. What attracted me to the firm was Navigoe’s emphasis on being fee-only – a firm that is not involved in product pushing and generating commissions – in addition to their focus on being true fiduciaries by putting client’s interests above their own.
WHY I CHOSE THIS PROFESSION…
The original career goal was to work as a commercial banker for a large financial institution. This changed after I met a professor who was also an active CFP®, and he encouraged me to alter my path after appreciating my enthusiasm for the topic, as well as my contributions in class. I believe financial planning is the perfect career choice for me due to my deep passion for not only helping people, but helping them with one of the most important aspects of their life – their finances. I also consider financial planning to be one of the best ways to make a difference in my community.
OUTSIDE OF WORK, I’M MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT…
I have a great passion for serving my local community. As a proud resident of Long Beach, I am heavily involved in civic engagement and volunteer efforts around the city. I’ve worked with several state and federal officials on legislation related to the financial planning profession, and have also worked with my mayor and vice mayor to bring the first financial planning pro bono event to the area.
WHEN NOT IN THE OFFICE, LOOK FOR ME…
- Studying for the Certified Financial Planner™ exam
- Procrastinating about my homework
- Road trips and exploring new places
- Enjoying the night life, especially around Long Beach and West Hollywood
- At my local city council chambers advocating for community-minded policies
HOW I’M ADVANCING MY CAREER KNOWLEDGE
In addition to studying for the CFP® exam, I’m also a second-year Ph.D. student in advanced financial planning and therapy through Kansas State University’s distance-based program. I am very excited about increasing my knowledge of behavior finance, psychology, financial therapy theory and application, with the ultimate goal of helping influence behavior change in clients who may have dysfunctional relationships with money.
